The first new discussion prompt of 2018! This one is pretty simple: In film and TV AP - do you prefer the aged version of a character to be done with prosthetic make-up on the young actor or by a look-alike elderly actor?(Provide examples of some good uses of your preferred method if you can!)I'm really a fan of using an elderly actress in the role of the age progressed character. Sometimes make-up looks good and believable but I feel like so often it comes out poorly and it takes me out of the fantasy.
Some great examples of old actresses being made to look like aged versions of their young counter-parts are the episode 'Paradise' from the Outer Limits that I linked to in my answer from last weeks prompt. And the sci-fi TV movie Do or Die: visibletime.ararchive.com/Do_or_Die3.htm

When it comes to old age makeups I have to quote a David Bowie song: "When it's good it's really good when it's bad it all goes to pieces" lol There are some really great ones & really poor ones, it all depends upon thr FX artists. Sometimes as you said chrono the makeup can cone out exaggerated & comical & I hate that, it definitely ruins the believability. Substituting an elderly actress works on some occasions, but only if the actress bears some resemblance to the younger actress. They have to sell the audience that it is an older version of the same person. Another good example of old age makeup & prosthetics to me is from the Honey I Shrunk the Kids tv show episode "Honey We're Still Young At Heart". However it also has an example of bad middle aged makeup. The eldery makeup fx/prosthetics done on Barbara Alyn Woods I think is fantastic, and I think she did an excellent, non-stereotypical old lady voice & good elderly movements. Conversely the middle aged makeup was very theatrical & poor, a big letdown but luckily the old age look was great, one of my favorites. www.themakeupgallery.info/age/soaps/honey.htm

Another good example of aging effects done well in my opinion is that done to sexy Samantha Janus' character Jude in the tv series Strange episode "Zoxim". I think the aging effects & final product were well done, maybe not quite as good as tha done on Barbara Alyn Woods above, & unfortunately most of the actual scene is at night & we don't get to see as much of it as I'd like to anyway lol www.themakeupgallery.info/age/2000sa/strange.htm

The makeup has to be great and if a lookalike is used well then she'd have to be a dead-on lookalike for me to enjoy that AP. My favourite makeup AP to date has to be Embeth Davidtz's makeup from Bicentennial Man: www.themakeupgallery.info/age/1990sc/bicentennial.htmBut CGI is looking to be the future of AP, judging by the work done on Captain America: The Winter Soldier:

I prefer old age makeup and prosthetic over an actual elderly actress. Nothing against our elder citizens seeking work, but I can just never quite get into it when it's a different actress (i.e. Charmed episode "Charrrmed!" where Paige is aged but her older form is another actress). I think I like knowing it's still the young and beautiful actress who, in a sense, has been aged herself. Plus, the added bonus is being able to see the actress do her best "old lady voice." Some do well, some do not lol Below are links to a few of my favorite make-up effects: www.themakeupgallery.info/age/2000sc/dewey.htmwww.themakeupgallery.info/age/2010sa/warehouse.htmvisibletime.ararchive.com/_Painkiller_Jane_.jpgAlso, Youthdrain, you posted the best one with The Winter Soldier. When I found out how the effect was done, it blew my mind.

I also prefer old age makeup and prosthetic over an actual elderly actress. No offense to the elderly actresses, but seeing a young actress, especially ones that have been playing a role for some time, in old age makeup and/or prosthetics makes the character they're playing, more believable when the character's old. Though, I would like to see more young actresses play old characters using CGI, like what Hayley Atwell did for Peggy Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I also like what they did with Embeth Davidtz's makeup from Bicentennial Man. I have a few OA makeups that I like. www.themakeupgallery.info/age/2000sb/atlantissleep.htm (I like the Stargate SG-1 make up of Amanda Tapping as Samantha Carter from the finale, "Unending".) www.themakeupgallery.info/age/scifi/angelrd.htm

I'm also prefer prosthetic on the young actor, mainly narrative and performance-wise it keeps things consistent throughout either the show, miniseries, or film. And not only are they using CGI in aging actors, they are also using it to regress actors like Carrie Fisher in Rogue One so in the future older actors can portray the younger versions of their character to provide the same consistency narrative and performance-wise. Right now the actress who is in prosthetics the most is Mandy Moore for present-day Rebecca on "This is Us". (Interesting fact is that the actors playing her adult kids are all older than she is.) The producers didn't know if they need to hire an older actress or if they could get the make-up right for Moore early in production of the first season, but they did and kept the secret pretty well until her surprise appearance at the end of the fourth or fifth episode I believe. Anyways, here's some still from this current season.

They could probably do a little better with it but considering that it probably has to be applied consistently and quite often, its pretty good. Hopefully, once they squeeze every bit of storyline dealing with the past, they will jump to the future for new storylines and we'll see Mandy Moore's character at 80 and the rest of the cast older as well.

I don't watch the series myself, but ever since she's first appeared in OA makeup I at least check out developments in the series through entertainment articles. At most they'll have two more seasons after this one for their current "present-day" storylines because the child actors for Randall's daughters won't be pre-teen forever. If I remember correctly, present-day events are happening in 2015. So maybe in fall 2019 or winter 2020, the series jumps to 2020 or 2025 and we'll see Rebecca in her 70s.
